Mental Health: Co-Occurring Conditions in Individuals with I/DD and Psychotropic Meds

An overview of managing some of the most common presentations of autism and associated behavioral and affective challenges, and the most common challenges presented to the clinician in an office setting. We will review the need for comprehensive and collaborative evaluation to prevent diagnostic overshadowing and then present a framework of how to safely prescribe and monitor these medications, in addition to evaluating effectiveness. Three case examples will be included.

Benjamin Margolis, MD, Senior Psychiatrist and Staff Neurologist, Access: Supports for Living

Benjamin Margolis, M.D. is board-certified in neurology and psychiatry, having completed the combined residency program at Brown University. He specializes in the neuropsychiatric care for adults with I/DD in the New York Hudson Valley. He attended medical school at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine after the postbaccalaureate premedical program at Columbia University and holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He serves as a board member of the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry, as treasurer, and on the Special Olympics NY Advisory Committee for their Strong Minds Program.
