05 Jul A Message from CP State on the Passage of the So-Called ‘Big Beautiful Bill’
To our CP State Affiliates, partners, and the broader disability community:
Lawmakers in Washington have passed the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” – a piece of legislation that includes devastating cuts to Medicaid.
Despite strong and sustained opposition from our advocates across New York and beyond, this bill moves forward with provisions that threaten the vital supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities rely on to live full, meaningful lives.
This is more than a policy decision. It is a dangerous step backward for the people and families we serve.
As a leader in statewide advocacy and a core member of New York Disability Advocates (NYDA), CP State has been at the forefront of efforts to stop these cuts. With our Affiliates, we’ve built a strong and unified voice, and while the bill passed, our advocacy made a difference. We forced changes to the most extreme proposals and made it clear that this community will not be ignored.
But our work is far from over. CP State is actively reviewing the bill’s language and assessing the impact these changes will have on our system of supports. We will deliver a full analysis and clear next steps for advocacy in the coming days.
We know that real progress is only possible when our community stands together – and we are proud to stand with you. Your voice matters. Your advocacy matters. And we will need both as we continue to fight for the rights, dignity, and futures of people with disabilities.
CP State will continue to lead with clarity, conviction, and purpose – and we will not rest until the supports for people with disabilities are protected and strengthened.
Sincerely,
Mike Alvaro
